A quiet giant is leaving the set
Miller Camera Support Equipment announced on August 24, 2026 that it will close after 72 years in business. The company says its final day of trading will be September 25, 2026, with operations ending on September 30, 2026.
Owners Mark and Diane Clementson are retiring. Their family has run the Australian company for 55 years. That is rare in our world, where gear brands get bought, merged, renamed, or disappear before most of us even pay off a camera package.
Why this matters to filmmakers
Miller is not just another tripod name. Founder Bob Miller created the first patented fluid action tripod head in 1946. That changed the way cameras moved. Smooth pans, clean tilts, better control, less fight from the rig. A simple idea, but one that shaped film, TV, news, docs, sports, and live production for decades.
If you have ever tried to tell a story with a slow push of movement, you know support gear is not boring. It is the quiet stuff that keeps a shot alive. A good head lets the operator breathe. A bad one turns the camera into a shopping cart with one busted wheel.
The real lesson for crews
This story is bigger than one company closing. It is a reminder that the tools we trust come from people, shops, machinists, service teams, and small family decisions. Not every piece of film gear is a logo on a box. Some of it carries a real line back to the people who built it.
For crews that own Miller gear, now is the time to think ahead. Check your parts, plates, legs, spreaders, cases, and service needs. If you rent, talk to your rental house. See what support they plan to keep and what systems they may move toward next.
What we can take from it
At Landsick Media, we talk a lot about story, but story still has to pass through gear. The camera has to move. The operator has to feel safe. The image has to land with intent. Miller helped make that possible for generations of shooters.
So this week, we tip the sticks. Not in a sad, dusty museum way. In a working crew way. We remember that every smooth pan has a little bit of engineering under it, and sometimes the best tools are the ones you stop noticing because they just do the job.
