The story

This week, ARRI reported that its cameras were used across several major 2026 Cannes winners, including the Palme d'Or winner Fjord, directed by Cristian Mungiu and shot by Tudor Vladimir Panduru RSC on ALEXA 35 with ARRI Master Anamorphic lenses.

The official Cannes winners list confirms Fjord won the Palme d'Or. ARRI also noted that other winners used its gear, including The Dreamed Adventure, Fatherland, The Black Ball, Everytime, Elephants in the Fog, Ben Imana, and I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning.

Why we care

For us, the big takeaway is not that one camera brand won Cannes. That is too easy. The real point is that image choices still matter at the highest level.

Some films used the ALEXA 35. One used the older ALEXA Mini. Others leaned into analog film cameras like the ARRICAM ST and ARRIFLEX 416. That mix says something useful: prestige filmmaking is not chasing one perfect format. It is chasing the right texture for the story.

The lesson for filmmakers

We can get stuck thinking new gear equals better work. Cannes is a good reset. The best camera is the one that helps the crew protect the feeling of the scene.

If you are shooting a small brand film, short doc, music video, or feature, the question is not, 'What is the most expensive camera we can rent?' The better question is, 'What does this story need to feel like?'

Clean and modern? Go sharp. Soft and haunted? Test older glass. Gritty and human? Let the image breathe a little. We do not need to copy Cannes. We need to copy the discipline behind the choices.

What this means on set

Before we pick a camera, we should build a look. Pull references. Test lenses. Think about skin tone, contrast, movement, and how the image will hold up in post. A camera body is not a magic wand. It is part of a chain.

The Cannes winners remind us that strong images come from strong decisions. The gear matters, but only after the vision is clear.
