Four filmmakers just got a real push
On October 14, 2026, the BFI and CHANEL announced the winners of the 2026 BFI & CHANEL Filmmaker Awards. The winners are Rich Felgate, Olive Nwosu, Imran Perretta, and Rachel Taparjan. Each filmmaker received £20,000 in support.
That matters because this is not just a trophy moment. It is cash, trust, and space to keep building a voice. For independent filmmakers, that mix is gold.
The common thread: point of view
The jury did not reward safe work. They picked filmmakers with sharp personal vision. Rich Felgate was recognized for urgent political storytelling. Olive Nwosu was praised for scale, craft, and intimacy in a debut. Imran Perretta was noted for emotional honesty and black-and-white cinematography. Rachel Taparjan was recognized for a personal documentary that uses camera, narration, and interviews to keep shifting how we see the story.
Different styles. Different subjects. Same lesson: the work had a spine.
What we can take from it
We talk a lot about gear, cameras, and the newest production tools. Those things matter. But they are not the reason a film stays with us. A strong film usually starts with a clear wound, a clear question, or a clear obsession.
That is the filmmaker's job. We have to know what we are chasing before we ask the crew, cast, client, or audience to follow us.
Audacity is not noise
The word tied to these awards is audacity. That can sound huge, like bigger scenes, louder cuts, or wild camera moves. But real audacity can be quiet. It can be the choice to sit longer in a moment. To tell a hard truth. To let silence do the work. To make a film that does not explain itself to death.
For us, that is the reminder this week. Brave work is not always flashy. Brave work is specific.
The bottom line for filmmakers
If you are making a short, doc, brand film, or feature, ask one simple thing before you shoot: what is the point of view we cannot fake?
Once we know that, the camera has a reason to move. The edit has a pulse. The story has a backbone.
